In this context, 'Floating' can be understood as a symbol or metaphor representing the inner void and instability of the individual. The floating state of a helium balloon itself is unstable; it lacks solid ground support and can change direction or height at any moment due to external factors. This floating state can be seen as a manifestation of the individual’s inner true self, characterized by a sense of freedom, lightness, and lack of constraints, but it also hints at inner emptiness and uncertainty.
This generation, born into an information explosion, grew up nurtured by pharmaceuticals and consumer symbols, with media voices and internet information shaping their cognitive framework. This is precisely the stage of pure simulation that Baudrillard describes in Simulacra and Simulation, where simulation itself becomes reality, completely replacing any connection to original reality. Here, symbols no longer merely represent reality but create a new one. This dominant reality not only alters people’s lifestyles but also deeply affects their sense of identity and social interactions. They learn rock 'n' roll before they learn rebellion; they learn Disney fairy tales before they learn about love. Everything—objects and emotions alike—comes pre-designed; all young people need to do is click a tag, add it to the cart, or save it to their favorites. They are born into the internet age, where the internet is not an escape from reality but reality itself. In the seemingly free space of the internet, there are no hidden depths, no underlying meanings—form triumphs over content, and form becomes content. Within the modes of internet communication, insincerity, pretense, showing off, venting, and the feeling of collapse and emptiness seem more authentic than any grand narratives or sincere emotions.
